A breakaway brake system is an emergency system for a trailer that separates from its tow vehicle. For trailers over 2,000 kg GTM, current VSB1 guidance requires the system to apply the trailer brakes immediately and keep them applied for at least 15 minutes.
Owners must verify more than the presence of a cable. The power source, switch, attachment, wiring, brake hardware and indicator or monitor required for the particular installation all need to work together.

Components owners should identify
A typical electric-brake breakaway arrangement includes:
- a switch on the trailer;
- a removable pin;
- a cable or lanyard connected to the tow vehicle;
- a dedicated or suitable power source;
- wiring to the brake circuit;
- the trailer brakes themselves;
- charging and monitoring equipment where specified.
Systems differ. Hydraulic or other approved brake designs may use different components. Use the trailer and component manufacturers’ documentation as the controlling test procedure.
Cable routing and attachment
The cable must be able to pull the switch pin if the trailer separates. It must not drag, loop around the towball, become tight during ordinary articulation or snag on another component.
Attach it to the point and by the method specified for the installation. Safety chains have their own function and are not a substitute for an independent, correctly routed breakaway trigger.
Turn the combination slowly through its practical articulation range in a controlled area to check cable slack and clearance, following manufacturer instructions. Stop if the cable stretches tight or can foul.
Power is an endurance question
A voltage reading can be useful, but the requirement concerns the system applying and holding brakes under breakaway conditions. A battery may display voltage yet lack capacity under load.
Follow the battery and breakaway manufacturer’s test, charge and replacement procedure. Record battery age, chemistry, charging source and test result. Do not substitute an arbitrary battery or fuse because it fits physically.
If the system uses the trailer house battery, verify the approved design and whether isolation switches, battery management or travel modes could disconnect it when towing. Never assume an appliance battery arrangement automatically meets emergency-brake needs.
A safe owner check sequence
- Park on suitable level ground and secure the combination.
- Read the specific switch, battery, controller and trailer instructions.
- Inspect the cable, pin, switch body, mounts and wiring.
- Check the required battery or monitor status.
- Confirm service brakes operate normally.
- Perform the breakaway test exactly as the manufacturer directs.
- Restore the pin and system to the travel state.
- Confirm no warning remains.
- Record the date and result.
Do not leave the breakaway pin removed longer than the specified test. Prolonged brake energisation can overheat components or drain the battery. Never test by allowing an uncontrolled trailer to move.
What a dashboard display does not prove
A controller can show a connected trailer while a breakaway battery is weak. A battery monitor can show charge while a switch is corroded. A successful breakaway pull can apply brakes while ordinary proportional control is poorly adjusted.
Test the service and emergency functions separately. Investigate any inconsistency, rather than selecting the favourable indicator.
Common failure points
Look for:
- frayed, kinked or incorrectly shortened cable;
- pin not fully seated;
- switch cracked, loose or contaminated;
- wiring damage near the drawbar;
- corroded terminals;
- discharged or aged battery;
- charging system not operating;
- isolation that disconnects emergency power;
- brakes out of adjustment or mechanically defective;
- cable attached where it cannot pull independently.
A visual inspection cannot establish internal battery capacity or brake performance. Schedule competent service at the interval specified by the manufacturers and after water, impact or electrical faults.
After a real activation
If the pin has been pulled during a separation or incident, do not simply reinsert it and continue. Secure the scene, inspect coupling, chains, drawbar, wiring, brakes, tyres and vehicle attachment points, and obtain professional assessment.
The cause of separation must be identified. Brakes may have heated, the battery may be depleted and structural components may have been loaded abnormally.
Modifications need more than a wiring diagram
Changing battery systems, brake controllers, axles or ATM/GTM ratings can affect the breakaway design and compliance. NSW modification guidance ties the requirement to ADR 38 and certification processes.
Use approved components and competent installation. Retain diagrams, approvals, invoices and test records. An online tutorial cannot certify a modified braking system.

A breakaway cable is the visible part of a complete emergency system. Compliance and safety depend on the whole chain producing immediate, sustained brake application when the tow vehicle is no longer there.
