Subtracting tare from ATM gives a rated load-carrying reference. It does not tell you how much gear you can still add today unless the trailer remains in its recorded tare configuration and every other limit has been checked.

Batteries, gas, water, awnings, toolboxes, spare wheels, recovery gear and later modifications can consume capacity before food or luggage is loaded. Coupling load also transfers to the tow vehicle, where it uses payload and affects axle loads.

What the subtraction means

Rated payload reference = ATM − tare

ATM is the trailer’s maximum total loaded mass when uncoupled. Tare is the trailer’s defined ready-for-service, unladen mass in its recorded configuration.

Every row is useful; none replaces the others.

Accessories change the starting point

Suppose a trailer leaves its recorded configuration and receives a larger battery, stone guard, awning, kitchen equipment and another spare. Their mass is part of the trailer before trip cargo.

Do not assume “factory option” means included in tare. Ask the manufacturer for the exact configuration used for the plate and RAV values. Weigh the current empty or normal baseline where uncertainty remains.

The August 2026 VSB1 update added caravan-specific minimum load-carrying-capacity provisions for new builds. That manufacturing calculation does not erase the mass of customer options or guarantee the tow vehicle can accept the resulting coupling load.

Water and consumables count

Water has substantial mass. Gas cylinders contribute their cylinder and contents. Food, fuel carried on the trailer, bedding and recovery equipment all count toward actual loaded mass.

Use a packing inventory with measured or manufacturer-declared item masses, but verify the finished trailer on suitable scales. Small optimistic estimates across many items can become a large error.

Record variable states on the weigh ticket:

  • fresh-water level;
  • waste-water level;
  • gas-cylinder contents;
  • fuel or generator liquids;
  • fridge and food load;
  • number and position of batteries;
  • awnings, boats, bikes and external carriers;
  • tools and recovery gear.

A weigh result without configuration notes is hard to reuse.

Coupling load is not free payload

When hitched, part of the trailer’s actual mass is supported by the tow vehicle. That coupling load consumes tow-vehicle payload and changes front and rear axle loads.

Add occupants, luggage, accessories, fuel and the coupling load when checking the tow vehicle’s GVM. Then measure individual axles and compare the full combination with GCM.

A headline maximum towing capacity does not override a lower towbar, coupling, axle, tyre, GVM or GCM limit. NSW Government guidance says the loaded trailer must not exceed the least of applicable towbar/coupling capacity, vehicle towing capacity, trailer carrying capacity and tyre capacity.

Build a real payload ledger

Start with the current trailer baseline, not the brochure.

Position matters because it changes coupling and axle load even when total mass stays the same. Heavy gear should be secured low and near the axle area in line with trailer and road-authority guidance, not placed at the rear merely to reduce ball load.

Weigh in a useful sequence

A competent mobile weighing service or weighbridge can help establish:

  1. loaded tow vehicle without the trailer, including occupants and trip cargo;
  2. complete combination;
  3. tow-vehicle front and rear axles while coupled;
  4. trailer axles while coupled;
  5. complete trailer uncoupled;
  6. coupling load using an appropriate method.

Methods and facility rules vary. Plan the sequence with the provider so each reading is valid and safe. Never unhitch on equipment or ground not designed for it.

Compare the results with ATM, GTM, GVM, GCM, axle, tyre, wheel, towbar and coupling ratings. Keep the configuration and date.

Do not “fix” one number in isolation

Moving mass rearward may reduce coupling load but increase instability risk. Adding a weight-distribution device does not create capacity and can affect component loads; use it only where the vehicle, towbar and device manufacturers permit.

Upgrading a trailer’s ATM on paper does not upgrade tyres, axles, drawbar, brakes or tow vehicle. Modifications can require engineering and RAV/registration changes. Seek appropriate professional advice.

A packing decision rule

Before adding an item, ask:

  • Is its mass already included in the baseline?
  • What happens to complete trailer mass?
  • What happens to GTM and coupling load?
  • What happens to tow-vehicle GVM and rear axle?
  • Is the item secured within component limits?
  • Which lower-priority item will be removed if margin is insufficient?

Leave practical margin for measurement uncertainty and trip changes rather than planning exactly to a limit.

Reweigh when the setup changes

Recheck after adding a battery, water tank, toolbox, carrier, spare, suspension component or substantial equipment. Reweigh if the packing plan, travellers or tow vehicle changes.

ATM minus tare is a valuable first calculation because it exposes the designed difference between two recorded values. The safe payload answer comes later, after the actual trailer, coupling, vehicle and axles have all been measured and compared with their own limits.
