Towball download—the load a coupled trailer imposes through the towbar—becomes part of the tow vehicle’s load. It consumes payload, changes axle loads and contributes to the combination mass. A vehicle can remain below its advertised towing capacity while exceeding GVM, rear-axle or towbar limits.
The correct check measures the loaded combination and compares every result with its own rating. A generic coupling-load percentage can be a planning clue, but it never overrides the vehicle and trailer manufacturers.
Follow the load path
When uncoupled, the complete trailer is supported by its tyres and jockey wheel or coupling. When coupled, the trailer tyres carry one part and the tow vehicle carries the coupling share.

The legal and engineering answer is constrained by the lowest applicable limit, not the largest number in the brochure.
Why payload disappears quickly
Vehicle payload must accommodate occupants, luggage, fuel where relevant, accessories and coupling load. Bullbars, canopies, drawers, fridges, recovery equipment and aftermarket wheels can reduce what remains before the trailer is attached.
Do not subtract towball download from an optimistic brochure payload without establishing the vehicle’s actual starting mass and specification. Weigh the tow vehicle loaded for the trip, then measure it coupled.
The rear axle can reach its limit before GVM because the coupling is applied behind the rear axle and changes load distribution. That is why total vehicle weight alone is insufficient.
Measure, do not estimate
A useful weighing sequence includes:
- tow vehicle loaded for travel, without trailer;
- front and rear axles of that vehicle;
- complete combination coupled;
- front and rear vehicle axles while coupled;
- trailer axles while coupled;
- complete trailer uncoupled;
- coupling load using suitable equipment and method.
Coordinate with a competent provider or weighbridge so the platform arrangement and unhitching are safe. Record occupants, fuel, water, gas and cargo states.
The actual relationship is:
complete loaded trailer mass = trailer-wheel mass + coupling load
That relationship helps cross-check measurements. It does not create capacity above ATM, GTM or component ratings.
Do not worship a percentage
NSW towing guidance gives general loading advice, including a coupling share range, but also says manufacturer limits must be followed. Trailer designs differ. A universal percentage cannot account for the approved geometry, suspension, load placement or tow vehicle.
Use the trailer manufacturer’s required loaded coupling range and the tow vehicle/towbar maximum. Then measure. If the actual result sits outside the specified range, change the load or obtain professional advice.
Moving heavy cargo to the rear simply to lower download can increase sway risk. Secure heavy items low and near the axle area according to manufacturer and road-authority guidance.
GVM and GCM are separate tests
GVM is the maximum permitted mass of the loaded tow vehicle. GCM is the maximum combined mass specified for the vehicle and trailer.
A combination can be below GCM but over GVM. It can be below both and still overload the rear axle, towbar or tyres. Check every line separately.
Some vehicle documentation also applies conditions to maximum towing or towball capacity as vehicle load increases. Read the exact owner manual and towbar label for the model and variant; do not transfer a rating from another trim.
Weight-distribution devices do not create payload
A weight-distribution hitch can redistribute loads across axles, but it does not reduce total combination mass or manufacture new capacity. Its use must be permitted by the tow vehicle, towbar, trailer and device manufacturers.
Incorrect setup can overload components or alter steering and braking behaviour. Measure axle loads before and after adjustment and follow the approved procedure.
Airbags or upgraded springs can change ride height without increasing certified GVM or axle ratings. Treat a level-looking vehicle as an appearance, not compliance evidence.

A positive margin on each line is necessary. Preserve practical margin for packing variation and measurement uncertainty rather than planning to the exact limit.
Recheck after changes
A new canopy, battery, long-range tank, toolbox, bike rack or rear carrier can change vehicle mass and leverage. Changes inside the trailer can alter coupling load without changing total trailer mass.
Reweigh after substantial modifications, when the normal travelling group changes, or when handling differs. Keep dated configuration notes with every result.
The pre-departure decision
Before towing, confirm:
- actual coupling load suits trailer, towbar and vehicle requirements;
- vehicle GVM and both axle ratings remain respected;
- trailer ATM and GTM remain respected;
- GCM and tyre limits remain respected;
- load is secured and distributed as specified;
- no device is being used to disguise an overload.
Preserve the evidence
Keep the weigh tickets, rating sources and loading configuration together. Note whether water tanks were full, which passengers were present, fuel state and every external carrier. If the coupling load is later measured with a portable scale, record the surface, trailer attitude and device range so it can be compared fairly with the original session.
When a dealer or accessory installer proposes a change, give them the complete table rather than only the towball figure. Ask which rating the change affects, whether the manufacturer approves it and what measurements must be repeated. A suspension change that improves ride height may leave certified axle and vehicle limits unchanged.
Recalculate margins before buying a heavier trailer as well as after. The available rear-axle and GVM capacity of the loaded tow vehicle may set a practical trailer limit well below its headline maximum towing number.
Towball download is not an isolated trailer number. It is the bridge between trailer mass and tow-vehicle payload. Follow that load through the connection, vehicle, axles and tyres, and prove the complete system with measurements.
